How To Complete

The Value Card Exercise From The Refocus Coaching Academy’s Purpose Driven Retirement Coaching Guide™️ for Financial Advisors:

1. Ensure your client is in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Allocate 10 to 30 minutes for this exercise.

2. Begin with the 51 value cards, each featuring an essential value and its definition. Set aside the instruction card for reference later.

3. Ask your client to go through the deck, sorting values into two piles:

  • Pile #1: Values that are important to the client.
  • Pile #2: Values of little or no importance.

4. Refine Your Choices: Set aside Pile #2. Lay out the cards from Pile #1 and have your client select 15 values that resonate most with them.

5. Repeat the process to narrow down to 10. Record these 10 values, in any order, on the “Discovering My Values” worksheet provided.

6. Finally, help your client prioritize the top 5 values from their list, ranking them from 1 (most important) to 5.

By completing this exercise, your clients will identify their top 5 unique values, tailored specifically to them.

    Value Card Exercise Testimonials

It was helpful to take inventory of my values through the card exercise, and to proactively identify parts of me that could be easier to ignore.

I went through all of the cards and wrote down my top ten values, including why I value them. Additionally, I set aside values I don’t have, but would like to have. It was incredibly well worth doing this exercise!

The card exercise gave me the ability to focus on my true values and align them with what I want to spend time on in retirement. I often overlooked this, but I appreciate the leadership of my advisor who guided me through it all.

The most helpful aspect of this activity was honing in on my true values, and understanding why they need to fit my retirement life. It really is a must-complete exercise for spouses who are navigating retirement!
